The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released updated seasonal outlook maps illustrating how El Niño is expected to influence weather patterns across the United States in the coming months. These projections, based on oceanic and atmospheric data, show distinct regional variations in temperature and precipitation likelihoods.
According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the current El Niño event has a 90% chance of persisting through the winter season, with peak strength anticipated between December and February. This marks one of the stronger El Niño patterns observed in the past decade, increasing confidence in forecast accuracy.
‘El Niño shifts the odds toward certain weather outcomes, but it doesn’t guarantee them,’ said Michelle L’Heureux, a climate scientist at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. ‘What we’re seeing is a tilt in probabilities — some areas are more likely to experience wetter or drier, warmer or cooler conditions than average.’
In the southern tier of the U.S., including California, Arizona, and New Mexico, the maps indicate increased chances of above-average precipitation, which could help alleviate drought conditions but also raise flood risks. The Southeast may also see wetter-than-normal conditions, particularly from late winter into early spring.
Conversely, the Pacific Northwest and parts of the Midwest are projected to experience drier-than-average weather, potentially exacerbating existing dry conditions in areas like eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Temperature forecasts show a split: warmer-than-average conditions are likely across the northern United States, while the southern Plains and Gulf Coast may see near- or slightly below-average temperatures due to increased cloud cover and rainfall.
Understanding El Niño’s Climate Influence
El Niño, part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean rise significantly above average. This warming alters global atmospheric circulation, influencing jet stream patterns and storm tracks worldwide. During El Niño winters, the Pacific jet stream often extends farther south across the U.S., steering more storms toward the southern states.
Historically, strong El Niño events have correlated with notable weather extremes, such as the wet winters of 1997–98 and 2015–16, which brought flooding to California and warmth to the Northeast. However, each event varies in intensity and duration, making localized impacts difficult to predict with certainty.
Looking ahead, forecasters will monitor ocean temperatures and atmospheric indicators to update predictions monthly. While the current outlook provides a probabilistic guide, NOAA emphasizes that short-term weather variability will still play a major role in day-to-day conditions. Communities are advised to stay informed through local forecasts and prepare for a range of possible outcomes based on their region’s projected risks.
