Warframe adds a tabletop-style RPG nod in Amir's Shockwave update

Warframe is taking a playful step toward tabletop fantasy with an August update centered on Amir, one of the characters tied to the game's expanding 1999 storyline.

Digital Extremes' upcoming Amir's Shockwave update will introduce Fables & Frontiers, a role-playing game-within-the-game that appears to riff on the structure and tone of Dungeons & Dragons without directly using the famous brand. The framing is deliberately tongue-in-cheek: a fantasy adventure built inside a long-running science fiction action game, with Amir finally getting a chance to sit down and play.

A fantasy detour inside Warframe

Warframe is best known for fast movement, loot-driven progression and its mix of space opera, body horror and ancient mythology. Fables & Frontiers gives Digital Extremes another way to fold a different genre into that universe. Rather than launching a separate product, the studio is using the update as a narrative and tonal diversion that can exist alongside Warframe's core missions, characters and seasonal additions.

The premise also fits the way Warframe has grown over the years. Digital Extremes has repeatedly used updates to experiment with format, from open-world zones to cinematic quests and side activities that change the pace of play. A tabletop-inspired segment gives the developers room to lean into character comedy, party dynamics and fantasy tropes while keeping the broader Warframe identity intact.

Amir has become part of the games newer cast as Warframe continues building out its Warframe: 1999 era. The August update appears designed to put more focus on him, using his enthusiasm for Fables & Frontiers as a hook for fresh dialogue and player-facing content. For fans, the appeal may be less about a direct parody and more about seeing Warframes characters respond to a familiar style of cooperative storytelling.

The Dungeons & Dragons influence is hard to miss, but the update's legally distinct positioning signals that Fables & Frontiers is meant as an affectionate genre homage rather than a licensed crossover. That approach lets Warframe play with the recognizable rituals of tabletop campaigns — fantasy heroes, quests and in-character imagination — while keeping the setting firmly under Digital Extremes' control.

For a game that has spent more than a decade reinventing itself through ambitious updates, a fictional tabletop RPG may seem like a small addition.
